Zezong Gu

Zezong Gu, MD, PhD is a tenured professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Dr. Gu is also a Research Health Scientist and Principal Investigator (PI) at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran Hospital for the multi-PI consortium: PRE-Clinical interagency research resourcE-Traumatic Brain Injury (PRECISE-TBI) Education Core for elevating rigor, reproducibility, transparency, and translation in preclinical TBI research. Dr. Gu’s research focuses on studies of TBI, cognitive decline, and chronic neurodegeneration. Research in his team uses multi-disciplinary approaches, including analytic chemistry and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS)-based proteomics, such as isotop/isobaric labeling and label-free 4D TimsTOF Pro DIA-PASEF quantitative analysis, systems biology by various bioinformatic analyses of ‘omics’ meta-data, AI-based algorithms for quantification of neuropathological features for digitalized whole slide imaging and transmission electron microscopy. Dr. Gu’s research has been supported by the NIH/NCCIH and HIEHS, Department of Defense /CDMRP, Veteran Affairs ORD BLR&D/CSR&D, American Heart Association, The Dana Foundation, NFL Charities Foundation, and research funds from the States of Missouri and Indiana Health Departments on the brain injury research programs. Dr. Gu has published over 90 peer-reviewed research articles in high-impact journals.
